Entertainer extraordinare Rhonda Burchmore is back in Brisbane to perform her latest show ‘BANG! BANG’! But this is Rhonda’s alter ego… not the Rhonda people know, and certainly not the girl next door.
Whether you know her from television, Carols by Candlelight or her many theatre performances, it’s safe to say that Rhonda Burchmore is a household name across Australia. However, when she graces the Spiegel Tent in next month’s Brisbane Festival, you’re in for a rude awakening. This is not the Rhonda Burchmore fans know.
“I guess you can expect Rhonda as this very wicked ring mistress in a circus type thing… getting her troupes into gear and being in charge of her circus base through amazing songs and wonderful visual effects to go with it,” Burchmore says in her usual excited way.
At 58 years of age, the sassy redhead has no intentions of slowing down – even joking that if she was forced to retire, she’d “curl up in a ball and die.” In fact, BANG! BANG! is the exact opposite of slowing down – it’s sexy, modern and Rhonda herself says “audiences will be shocked and taken on a rollercoaster ride.”
The new show is a concept from Troy Armstrong and choreographed by Matt Browning, and also guest stars Neighbours actor Rob Mills.
“Rob is my very special guest or as I call it, my little victim that I will find on the night to torment,” she said.
“I love Rob so much and he’s such a good sport, it’s like welcome to this wicked underground world of Rhonda’s ‘out there’ fantasy, and Rob’s part of that.
“We do everything from Kylie to Tina Turner to Cher to Miley Cyrus, so it’s a really contemporary mix of music.”
Playing the wicked fairy Carabosse in Bonnie Lythgoe’s Sleeping Beauty for Melbourne and Sydney Audiences, Burchmore says she’s keen to get back to the Sunshine State where she believes her biggest fans are.
“I love Brisbane, they’re one of my biggest support bases in terms of coming to my shows” she said.
“I think the people in Queensland have everything over those that live in the South in terms of warmth and just good manners.. they just appreciate you more”
What’s next for Ms. Burchmore beyond Sleeping Beauty and Brisbane Festival you ask?
Giving the inside scoop to Lifestyle Queensland, the triple threat revealed she is in fact writing a sitcom with her best friend Lara Mulcahy.
“It’s a very different kind of Kath and Kim, but along those lines.. women who are very different but are absolute best friends and the comedy that goes with that,” she said.
“There’s still many musical roles I still want to do before I get too old and all sorts of things like that.. but hopefully just having a little less hectic of a year than this year.”
If you’d like to see Rhonda Burchmore, Rob Mills and a talented cast and crew performing BANG! BANG! you’re in luck.
